It has been a long and strenuous journey, but after 25 years away, Coventry City have finally made their way back to the Premier League. Despite financial troubles, ground troubles and a foray into the 4th division, The Sky Blues will kick off 2026/27 with a trip to The Emirates to face the reigning champions.

With Frank Lampard at the helm, Coventry started the 2025/26 season in electric form, and led the way essentially from Gameweek 1, securing the title and finishing 11 points ahead of Ipswich behind them.

However, the Premier League is an entirely different ball game, and Coventry will have their work cut out for them if they are to stay in the top flight. However, with investment from the top, a strong manager in Lampard and a squad that dominated the Championship, Coventry will be confident of doing that.

The Sky Blues are back in the top flight – but will they be able to stay there?

Last Season

Fresh off of the back of a cruel, last minute defeat in the 2024/25 Playoffs to Sunderland, the Sky Blues knew they weren’t far off of achieving that elusive promotion. The core of the squad remained intact, and, with Frank Lampard returning, Coventry were one of the pre-season favourites for promotion.

The Sky Blues flexed their muscles immediately, with a 5-3 away victory over a Derby and a 7-1 dismantling of QPR setting the tone for the rest of the season. Coventry didn’t taste defeat until late October, where a Kieffer Moore hat-trick denied the visitors a Halloween treat, and minus a small blip around Christmas, The Sky Blues cruised through the Championship.

Crucial victories over promotion rivals Middlesbrough and Millwall solidified their credentials, and, with 3 games to go, Coventry were promoted back to the Premier League. Frank Lampard’s men, bolstered by the loan signings of Carl Rushworth and Frank Onyeka, were imperious all campaign long, and the title was deservedly theirs.

The Boss

When Coventry dismissed club legend Mark Robins from his position following a slow start to the 2024/25 season, there was some significant backlash from Coventry supporters; Robins was seen as a hero in the city, saving the club from its darkest period in League 2 to just a single penalty away from the Premier League in 2023, as well as an FA Cup semi-final in 2024, where The Sky Blues narrowly lost to Manchester United.

However, Lampard has certainly proved his doubters wrong, bringing Coventry back to the Premier League in his first full season in charge. Despite not living up to his playing career, Lampard did an adequate job in charge of both Chelsea and Everton before his Coventry stint, but has gained heavy plaudits for his work in the West Midlands.

A key factor of Lampard’s play is the prominence of wide players; Coventry have put a heavy emphasis on balls into the box during Lampard’s tenure, whether that be from the out and out wingers or overlapping full backs, particularly Milan Van Ewijk, who is given free reign to bomb forward down the right hand side. Coventry led the Championship in crosses in both 2024/25 and their title winning 2025/26 campaign to great success. With one of the defensive midfielders dropping to form a back three in possession ,Lampard is also flexible and can change his style of play depending on the opposition, something that will be valued greatly as Coventry make the step up to the Premier League.

Confirmed Transfers

For a promoted club, Coventry have kept their summer dealings to a minimum so far, prioritising keeping the players they had on loan last season at the club, with both Frank Onyeka and Player of the Season Carl Rushworth penning permanent deals this summer from Brentford and Brighton respectively.

Rushworth in particular has been a top target for The Sky Blues since he returned to his parent club. The 25 year old shot stopper was a revelation between the sticks for Coventry and collected a clean sweep of the club’s Player of the Year awards, and now, makes a permanent switch to the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Despite not being ad big money a move as Rushworth, Nigerian powerhouse Frank Onyeka was crucial to Coventry’s title push after joining on loan in January, and Coventry have elected to make his move to the West Midlands permanent. Onyeka penned a 4 year contract to stay, and his return will be a huge boost to the midfield.

Elsewhere, Swiss defender Aurele Amenda joins from Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany. The former Young Boys man experienced a breakout campaign with Die Adler, featuring in 24 Bundesliga games, as well as five Champions League matches, prompting Coventry to break the bank to bring him to the club.

The final player that Coventry have confirmed so far is French winger Loum Tchaouna, who arrives from Burnley in a £20m move. Tchaouna showed flashes of potential last season under Scott Parker, but overall didn’t contribute too much as Burnley failed to avoid relegation to the second tier. Coventry will hope he can show more than he did last season, especially in a side that likes to play through its wingers.

Squad In Focus

As the Championship winners, Coventry come into the season with probably the most well rounded squad of the three promoted sides. The Sky Blues have strength in depth all across the pitch, and that could prove crucial as they look to escape a fight at the bottom.

In goal, Carl Rushworth will make the number 1 shirt his own, just as he did last season. There was rarely any doubt that Rushworth would return, and finally, Coventry have the number 1 who led them to the promised land.

Defensively, Bobby Thomas and Liam Kitching were impenetrable for the whole season, both crucial to the way Frank Lampard operated in the Championship. However, with the arrival of Aurele Amenda, one of them may have to make way for the Switzerland international, but both will still play a big role for The Sky Blues this season. On the right, Milan Van Ewijk will bring his marauding runs into the Premier League, whilst Jay Dasilva will be tasked with shutting down some of the best right sided wingers in the game, no easy task for the former Bristol City man.

In midfield, Frank Onyeka will likely partner Matt Grimes in the middle. Grimes makes his return to the Premier League for the first time since 2018, when he was playing for Swansea, whilst Danish midfielder Victor Torp will also play a big part after agreeing to a new contract at the start of June. Additionally, Josh Eccles brings strength in depth and will likely sit behind Grimes in the pecking order, whilst Jack Rudoni will pull the strings creatively from number 10. Rudoni has been excellent for Coventry since joining from Huddersfield, and the Sky Blues will hope he can carry his form from the Championship into the Premier League.

Perhaps the area where Coventry have the most depth is up front and out wide. On the left, new signing Loum Tchaouna will compete with established winger Ephron Mason-Clark and whilst Brandon Thomas-Asante will compete with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto off the right. Speaking of Wright, American forward Haji Wright led Coventry in the goalscoring charts, and will likely be trusted up front again by Lampard; Wright is a perfect fit for the way Coventry play, and will feel hard done by if he s to drop to the bench, whilst former Everton man Ellis Simms can play the role of super-sub, which he has done to great effect throughout his time at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Key Player: Milan Van Ewijk

Since joining from Heerenveen in the summer of 2023, no player in the Championship has been quite as consistently brilliant as right back Milan Van Ewijk. Crucial to everything Coventry do, Van Ewijk is a marauding full back, one who loves to get on the overlap and wing balls in. He led the Championship in successful crosses, notching double digits in assists, and uses his blistering pace to make his way past opposition defenders. Van Ewijk is also smart defensively however, blessed with absurd recovery pace and an intelligence that makes attackers second guess taking a chance at him. In addition, the Dutchman is also ridiculously durable, playing in 44 of Coventry’s 46 Championship matches last season. The Sky Blues are lucky to have someone as dynamic as Van Ewijk, and after signing a new deal in February, he will stick around in Coventry colours for a while too.

One to Watch: Victor Torp

An unknown name when he joined from Norwegian side Sarpsborg in January 2024, Victor Torp has endeared himself to the Coventry faithful, and has become one of the star men in Coventry’s side. A Danish youth international, Torp is a flexible midfielder, able to play in a 2-man pivot or as a number 8 thanks to his creativity, and, in 39 games last season, registered 10 goals and 7 assists, proving a crucial goal threat for Coventry too. Without the ball, Torp is just as important, with an engine that allows him to run for days, win the ball and immediately start a counter attack. Victor Torp might not be a name that many know at the minute, but if Coventry are to be successful, he could be right at the centre of it.

What’s Still Missing?

Whilst Coventry have secured their primary targets in Rushworth and Onyeka, there remains work to be done for The Sky Blues, who are keen to bring in some new faces in defence and out wide.

One of these names linked with a move to the Coventry Building Society Arena is Porto left back Francisco Moura. With Jay Dasilva as the only natural left back at the club, a second is likely to be brought in and speculation surrounding Francisco Moura’s future at Porto has been rife recently, with interest from all across Europe being registered for the 26 year old.

Another intriguing link is one for Mykhailo Mudryk, who has been touted with a loan move to the West Midlands with Lampard managing the player durig his interim stint with The Blues. Chelsea paid upwards of £70m for the Ukrainian, but he has been unable to play for two years due to a doping ban looming over his head, but the former Shakhtar man has been allowed to resume his career. A move to Coventry could be one to help re-ignite it, and allow him to show why Chelsea spent so much money on him.

In the centre of the park, Gustavo Hamer has been linked with a return to Coventry; the Dutchman left The Sky Blues for Sheffield United in 2023, and now, following his former club’s promotion to the Premier League, speculation suggests that his former employers are keen on a reunion.

Season Prediction

Coventry made a mockery of the Championship last season, but their form did tail off towards the end of the season. Manager Lampard will hope that that was just a bump in the road, and, after scoring 97 goals in 46 Championship games, they certainly have the ability to carry their form into the Premier League.

However, the squad is severely lacking in Premier League experience. The only player with any significant experience in the top flight is Frank Onyeka, and even he only played 75 league games for Brentford during his 5 years in West London, raising question marks over how several of the key squad members will take to Premier League football. However, Lampard does have experience at staying in the division, when he kept cash-strapped Everton in the division, albeit with the help of Brazilian number 9 Richarlison and England number 1 Jordan Pickford. However, Lampard has certainly improved as a manager since then, and with a season and a half in Coventry, knows his players inside-out.

Coventry certainly have to be careful but, with some added investment into the squad, Coventry have the best chance out of the three promoted sides to stay up. A task that I think they will just about complete.
